I love reading other people’s blogs. I don’t do a good job about mentioning them here, but I am going to try to remedy that and help my fellow bloggers as I go.
Brandon has an awesome blog and he is having running woes. Click here for his article. Here is what I would do Brandon, good luck.
Your cramping and ankle trouble are two separate issues. Cramping is a more easily treatable problem.
- Stretch. You need to spend 10 minutes before and after warming up and stretching. Check my stretching guide here.
- Stay Hydrated. Looks to me like you are doing that. Make sure your getting some sort of sports drink in you to keep your electrolytes in check.
- Bananas, or really any high potassium food may help.
As for your ankle trouble I would put odds on the fact you’re in the wrong shoes. Check out my article on how to pick running shoes here. Also, you have lost a great deal of weight. However your ankles still may not be up to speed with carrying a 200lbs runner. You need to take whatever program your running and make it yours. Take as much rest as you need and walk as often as you need.
Getting past the 30 minute hurdle is a big deal. It may take you a few months. Keep me posted and always happy to help.

Thanks so much for the advice Joe. I did just go out last weekend to a specialty running store and bought a good pair of running shoes. I think my problems from last night had to do with the fact that I hadn’t fully recovered from before. Once I am recovered, hopefully these new shoes will be much better for me.
Right now, I’m doing C25K, but as you said, I may need to modify it a bit and make it my own. For the time being, I’m going to give my body the rest it needs. Once it’s ready, I’ll get back out there, and be more careful not to push myself too much.
This is SO cool.
Thanks for sharing so many great tips and guides with us all. I downloaded your marathon/half marathon training guide today and am anxious to read your plan. Thanks for letting me know about it! I have officially signed up to do a half marathon in Jan. 2011, so I’m sure your guide will benefit me greatly.
Thanks again, I think it’s so awesome that you reach out to other newbie runners like me and Brandon.
